How Invisalign Works
Invisalign utilizes multiple sets of special, custom-made clear aligners that apply gradual, targeted pressure to the teeth to realign them into a straighter position, or to correct other orthodontic issues such as overbites, underbites, crossbites, and more. Patients typically have to wear their aligners for 20 to 22 hours every day, only removing them to clean their teeth or eat, in order for the aligners to properly move the teeth gently and discreetly.
Who is a Good Fit for Invisalign?
We provide solutions for the following problems:
Misaligned/Crooked Teeth
Misalignment and crowding can wreak havoc on your smile, causing crooked teeth, jaw issues, and limited oral functionality. Symptoms of misalignment and crowding may include crooked teeth, overlapped teeth, difficulty chewing, and discomfort or pain while eating.
Invisalign treatment easily and comfortably shifts your teeth using custom-fit aligners to gradually move them into proper alignment, leaving any crowding issues you have in the past.
Chipped/Cracked & Worn Down Teeth
Stop hiding your smile because of chipped, cracked, or worn down teeth - Invisalign aligners can be paired with other cosmetic dentistry solutions such as porcelain veneers, crowns, and bonding to correct multiple smile issues.
Before starting Invisalign treatment, we will thoroughly examine your teeth, identify any issues you have, and correct your chipped, cracked, or worn down teeth. After correcting these issues, if it’s determined that you are a good candidate for Invisalign treatment, we can create custom-fit aligners for you to straighten your smile.
Overbite/Underbite
If your bottom teeth jut out, or your upper teeth come forward past your bottom teeth, you likely have an overbite. Underbites and overbites can make it difficult to chew properly and speak clearly, and they can even cause your teeth to wear down more quickly over time.
With Invisalign aligners, jaw pain, chewing difficulties, gum disease, and other oral health issues caused by overbite/underbite are no more. Using a 3D visual interface and precise mapping software, we can create your aligners and custom-fit them to your unique smile.
Gapped Teeth
Whether you are embarrassed by or are experiencing pain or discomfort in your gums because of a large gap in between your teeth, Invisalign aligners can be used to close any unwanted, troublesome gaps.
Gapped teeth can also create pockets between your teeth and gums, causing discomfort and pain, trapping food, and in some cases, lead to gum disease and other oral health issues. Talk to your dentist during your consultation to see how Invisalign treatment can help you correct spacing issues and get a brand-new, beautiful, seamless smile you can be confident about.
The Benefits of Invisalign
Invisalign offers many unique benefits that traditional orthodontic options simply cannot match. Consider these advantages:
- The aligners are made of a transparent plastic material and are pretty much invisible while being worn.
- The aligners are fully removable, meaning Invisalign doesn’t have the same dietary restrictions as metal braces, and oral hygiene is easier to perform daily.
- Patients generally enjoy shorter treatment timelines compared to metal braces, as well as a more comfortable overall experience.
Living with Invisalign Clear Aligners
With Invisalign clear aligners, you can:
- Keep eating all your favorite foods.
- Continue playing all the sports and games you love.
- Keep brushing and flossing like you normally do, without the hassle of metal brackets or wires.
- Be ready for anything that comes your way, whether it's going to a movie with friends or out for a coffee with family - just take your aligners out while eating or drinking, then brush or rinse your teeth before putting them back in, and you are all set!
- Carefully monitor your progress - blue compliance indicator dots let you know if the aligners are being worn enough.
- Avoid having to see the doctor for broken brackets or bands - Invisalign aligners only require check-ups every 4-8 weeks, during which your dentist will check your progress and give you a fresh set of aligners.
- Have peace of mind knowing your aligners are clean. Braces can easily get food stuck in them, and it can be difficult to clean brackets and bands, but Invisalign aligners are easily removable; you can rinse and gently brush them every night to keep them fresh and clean.
Invisalign FAQs
How Long Does Invisalign Take?
It’s natural to wonder how long it takes Invisalign to straighten your smile. The answer can vary from person to person because it depends on your unique circumstances. You can usually expect to complete this orthodontic method after 12 to 18 months. While a year and a half might seem like a long time, it’s still 4 months faster than the average treatment with traditional braces. Plus, if you’re correcting only a mild misalignment, you might finish in as soon as 6 months.
Wearing your aligners for the allotted time daily is essential to staying on track with your overall treatment timeline. If your teeth revert to their previous positions, you may have to repeat certain trays to catch back up.
Does Invisalign Hurt?
Many people avoid treatments that they fear will be long or agonizing, but thankfully, that’s generally not the case with Invisalign. That said, anything that exerts enough pressure over your teeth to shift them in your jaw has the potential to cause some mild aches, especially when you first start wearing your trays.
It’s normal to have a brief adjustment period for a week or two when you’re a new patient. Then, your mouth becomes somewhat desensitized. Then, as you continue treatment, you’ll switch to a new set of aligners every couple of weeks to account for the ongoing movement of your teeth. Some patients experience renewed tenderness for a couple of days when they switch to a fresh pair of trays because of the changed dimensions.
Thankfully, any discomfort can typically be relieved with over-the-counter meds like Tylenol or ibuprofen or a cold compress pressed to your face.
Is Invisalign Cheaper Than Braces?
The cost of your treatment is based on its duration and the number of sets of aligners you’ll need to complete it. Unfortunately, we can’t provide a detailed estimate until you arrive for your consultation and examination.
In many instances, Invisalign costs about the same amount overall as traditional braces. Both solutions average around $5,000. However, additional factors can impact the total amount owed, like whether you need to invest in special attachments, bands, wax, or other supplies.
Some patients claim that the alternative costs more than the traditional method because many insurance policies don’t include clear aligners. Your plan might be different, though, so it’s worth checking the details to maximize your benefits.
What Happens After Invisalign?
Hooray! You’ve finally wrapped up treatment and can safely remove your last set of trays! Now, what?
First, you must schedule a follow-up appointment with our team to verify the results. We'll begin post-treatment once we’ve checked to ensure everything is where it should be. If everything looks good, we’ll recommend appropriate paths forward. Many patients need to wear a retainer, an oral appliance that keeps your teeth in their new positions long enough for them to adjust to the change permanently.
The directions for wearing your retainer will be based on your situation. Usually, you begin by wearing it full time, then gradually decreasing frequency until you only keep them in for bed. Some patients must insert them nightly, while others only need them every other evening.
